Frequently Asked Questions
Do water wells go dry?
It is a possibility for a well to run dry permanently, however it is quite uncommon. When a well “runs dry”, it doesn’t mean that the well will never produce water again. In California, we experience prolonged droughts, which drains the water table, however precipitation can recharge, which in turn raises the water table levels.
How can you tell if your water well is going dry?
The first sign to look for is water sputtering out of the tap, which would indicate air pockets in the well. Another common sign to look for is water that is not running clear or appears dirty or filled with sediment. It’s always a good idea to have your well inspected annually to determine the static water level which will indicate if you need a new well drilled. Is the water quality better the deeper the well?
The depth of the well can affect the quality of water because the deeper the well, the further away it is from potential ground contaminants and pollutants. However, that does not necessarily mean that it is better to have a deeper well. We can determine the best depth by evaluating several factors specific to your land and the patterns of groundwater in your area. A common misconception is that the deeper the well, the more water volume or pressure, however, this is based on the depth of the water table in your area.
How do you know where to drill?
The location of the well depends on a variety of factors, including customer preference, distance from the structure where water is being supplied, setbacks mandated by the county, and fitting our equipment into that area to drill and construct the well. Once we have drilled a bore hole, we use a method called Geophysical Gamma Ray Logging to characterize the rock/sediment and measure resistivity of water. By using this technique, we can determine if a well is going to produce the desired gallons per minute.
When should you drill on new home construction?
It is recommended to have the well drilled first to ensure you will have a reliable water source once the house is completed. The timing is flexible, however, depending on how large the property is, with the size of our equipment, it is best to drill when there are no other contractors onsite.
How long does it take to drill a new well?
The duration of drilling is dependent on a variety of factors such as depth of well, well location, and size of casing. For the average domestic well, you can expect 3-5 days, while for the average agricultural well, you can expect 7-15 days.
What is the average life span of a water well pump?
The average life span of a water pump is 8-15 years, which is primarily determined by the maintenance and type of pump installed. The largest factor in your pump’s life expectancy is the frequency of your pump’s duty cycle, which is how often the pump runs throughout the day. Find more info here on water pumps
